How do I correctly indicate the percentage of publishing rights I control?

We are asking you to indicate your share of the composition. What you enter here should correspond with the songwriter splits for the song. Songwriter splits indicate how much each songwriter contributed to a specific composition. The percentage contribution of each songwriter dictates their ownership share of that composition. Songwriter splits must always add up to 100%.
For example, if you write a song by yourself, then you have 100% of that song. If you and a co-writer contributed equally to a composition, then you would each have 50% of that song.
100%
You are the sole songwriter of the composition.
0%
You did not write the composition.
Partial
You co-wrote this composition.
Be advised, providing false information may have negative implications, including but not limited to; removal from the CML, restricted CML access for future releases, takedowns from DSPs, withholding royalties for tracks with false information, and account banning.

Why are you asking me to indicate the percentage of publishing rights I control?

The information you provide here helps us do two things:
  1. Determine whether your tracks are eligible for delivery to Facebook / Instagram, YouTube Content ID, and the Commercial Music Library (CML). If you are the sole songwriter and your song is not represented by a publisher, you will have the option to opt-in for these features.
  2. Determine whether SoundOn can pay you publishing royalties generated from our in-house partners, TikTok/Douyin and TikTok Music. If you wrote or co-wrote this song and it is not represented by a publisher, we will pay you your share of publishing royalties from TikTok/Douyin and TikTok Music.
SoundOn will not take a cut from publishing royalties collected from our in-house partners.

What are compositions and songwriters, and how do they relate to music publishing?

A composition refers to the underlying musical components that make up a song. Generally, this includes the lyrics and melody. This differs from a sound recording, which is a recorded performance of a musical composition.
Individuals who contribute to creating the underlying composition of a song are referred to as songwriters. This differs from recording artists, who generally contribute to creating sound recordings. Once a songwriter fixes a composition in a tangible format, they become the owner of the composition copyright. In doing so, they are granted exclusive rights related to their composition, including the right to collect royalties generated from the use of their composition.
Music publishing is the business related to the administration and monetization of composition copyrights. Administering and monetizing composition copyrights is not easy, and there are aspects of this that songwriters cannot do on their own. This is where music publishers come in. Music publishers are business entities that represent songwriters and their compositions, ensuring that all royalties generated from the use of compositions are collected and paid back to songwriters.

What is an ISWC?

An ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code) is a unique, permanent and internationally recognized reference number for the identification of musical works. These numbers are generated and assigned when a work is registered with your PRO.
Please leave this field blank if you have not previously registered this track with a PRO.

How do I find my ISWC?

You will be able to locate your ISWC via your PRO; either within your songwriter portal or on your PRO's public repertoire. If your song is registered with a PRO, please input the ISWC exactly as it appears with your PRO.
Please note, your PRO may wait to assign an ISWC until all co-writers register their share of the work.

What is the Commercial Music Library (CML)?

The Commercial Music Library (CML) is a library of tracks that have been pre-cleared for commercial use on TikTok, meaning that brands can use the songs in their advertisements on TikTok without needing to secure a separate sync license.
For a song to be eligible, the following requirements must be met:
  • There is only one contributing songwriter/composer.
  • The uploader controls 100% of the publishing rights for the composition, and it is not represented by a third party publisher or publishing administrator.
SoundOn reserves the right to curate the songs which are added to the CML and not add tracks which do not meet the curation guidelines of the Commercial Music Licensing team.
Please note:
  • At this time, access to add your tracks to the CML is only open to artists who meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Providing false information and opting songs into the CML that do not meet the requirements outlined above may have negative implications, including but not limited to; removal from the CML, restricted CML access for future releases, or takedowns from DSPs.

What is a Performance Rights Organization (PRO)?

PROs are organizations responsible for collecting license fees on behalf of songwriters and publishers when a song is publicly broadcast or performed. These license fees are referred to as performance royalties. Public performances can include play in television, radio, clubs, restaurants, websites, streaming platforms, or other broadcasting systems.
Some examples of PROs include:
US - ASCAP, BMI
CA - SOCAN
BR - ABRAMUS
AU - APRA
ID - WAMI
UK - PRS

Why does SoundOn collect my publishing information during upload and registration?

Publishing information, such as the name of the publisher, or the Performing Rights Organization (PRO) the artist is affiliated with may be used to verify the publishing rights of a recording / composition. In order to be eligible for monetization scenarios such as the CML, the track must be fully licensed on the Recording and the Publishing sides.
